We have been busy this season with our Chuck Wagon at the Everglades Seafood Festival, serving burgers, dogs, mullet dip, and fillets. We also had a successful BBQ Chicken Dinner fundraiser in McLeod Park, which was well appreciated by our friends and neighbors.
On March 12 at our monthly club meeting, which takes place starting at 6:00 PM in the Fellowship Hall behind the Everglades Community Church, our planned speaker is from Lighthouse of Collier, who will tell us what services they offer to visually impaired people here in Collier County. We may also host members of other area clubs for a “Zone” meeting and could even have a visit from higher-ups. We welcome all visitors.
Our biggest event of the year will be our Turkey Shoot (paper targets, no birds are hurt) which will take place on the weekend of March 21-22. Like last year, this event will take place at Mayberry’s Cypress Tower Camp, located at 18101 Cypress Tower Road, Ochopee, FL 34141. Raffle tickets are for sale around town with gift certificate prizes. Door prizes will also be awarded. Each shoot is essentially a 50-50 drawing, with the winner getting half the shoot money and the Lions Foundation of Everglades getting the other half.
Since the rifles are using birdshot at the targets, the winners are purely random luck. The winner could be a first-time shooter or an experienced pro. You never know. But the judges use calipers to see which shooter got closest to the center of the target. Safety, of course, is paramount. There will be strictly enforced guidelines.
Last year’s shoot was the first after an absence of about eight years. We are happy to be able to offer it again. This is a great way to keep the Gladesmen culture alive for families in our area.
The Everglades Lions Club has been serving the greater Everglades community since 1952. We thank you for your continued support.
