Hangar Repairs and More Events Ahead at Everglades Airpark

Posted

Collier County recently confirmed that the contract for hangar repairs at Everglades Airpark has two more steps before it is awarded to Allen Enterprises of Orlando. Once the county repairs and leases the eight hangars long-term and places two tie-down planes, it can reapply to the Federal Aviation Administration for funding.

It would seem logical for the County to pursue acquisition of the adjacent property for future expansion of the Airport.

Additionally, the Friends of Everglades Airpark held its 4th Annual Pancake Breakfast for the pilots on Oct. 3. 25 planes flew in; several pilots came by car. Once again, with the help of 16 volunteers, all guests were treated to our specialty blueberry pancakes, sausage, fresh fruit, juice, and coffee. Pilots were given rides from the airport to McLeod Park and back, with the weather breaking in our favor that day. We will host one more Pancake Breakfast later on in March.

Our next event will be our 2nd Annual Airpark Day on November 14. Last year, this event was well received. Vendors will have displays related to aviation. Lorenzo Walker Technical College will be present and feature career paths not only in aviation but also in Marine Mechanics. Aztec Airways, Orlando Avionics, Everglades Air Tours, and the 99’s will also be returning.

The car used in the Smokey and the Bandit film will also be on display with at least two other muscle cars. The collection is being brought in from Bandit Antiques in Arcadia through a sponsorship from the Florida Stone Crabbers Association.

Model aircraft demonstrations will be held, with live entertainment and the Everglades Lions Club providing their famous hot dogs, burgers, and pork barbecue. It will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in McLeod Park.

Two future events are also in the planning stages. The first will be a Stone Crab Day in mid-January, and the second, in early April, will be a Fly-In Fishing event limited to 20 participants. Details on both events will be forthcoming.
