The Everglades Lost a Legend, but We Lost Our Everything.
With broken hearts and a sadness words could never express, our family shares the passing of our beloved Captain Doug House.
84 years on this earth, a lifetime of stories, and a legacy that will live on for generations. Yet somehow, 84 years still wasn’t nearly enough.
Captain Doug was truly one of a kind. Larger than life, strong as steel, fearless, stubborn, brilliant, and loved beyond measure. He was the man who started the first airboat tours in Everglades City, but he was so much more than the businesses he built. He was the heart of our family, our strength, and the man we always thought would be here forever.
If you ever crossed paths with Captain Doug, chances are you heard his famous words, “Where you from?” It didn’t matter if he’d known you for five minutes or fifty years. He never met a stranger, and everyone walked away with a story.
Our family and family business have weathered many storms, but nothing could have prepared us for this one. This is by far our hardest hit yet. How do you say goodbye to the man who started it all? The man who seemed larger than life itself?
It’s hard to imagine the Everglades without him. Even harder to imagine a tomorrow without him in it.
The airboats will keep running, the stories will keep being told, and we will carry on everything he worked so hard to build. But there will forever be an empty place that no one else could ever fill.
We love you, Papa. More than you could ever know.
